A bicyclist was shot, suffering critical wounds late Wednesday night in an altercation with someone in a car on a street west of Highway 99, Fresno police said.

Lt. Steve Card said the shooting happened around 11 p.m. outside apartments on Shields Avenue near Marks Avenue.

Investigators say the victim, who was not named, was riding a bicycle west on Shields when a car passed by, flipped a U-turn and pulled up to the victim. There was an altercation and someone from the vehicle shot the victim.

Card said investigators remained at the scene early Thursday morning and weren't ready torelease a suspect description.
