Man stabbed after trying to help his friend who was in an ‘unfair’ fight

A man was stabbed in downtown Fresno’s Chinatown on Saturday after attempting to help a friend who was in a fight.

Police responded to reports of a stabbing victim at 1474 Fresno St. around 11 a.m., said Lt. Joe Gomez of the Fresno Police Department.

Arriving police found a 36-year-old man had been stabbed directly above his heart. Fresno Fire personnel treated the victim until American Ambulance arrived to treat and then take the man to Community Regional Medical Center.

Gomez said the victim is currently in stable condition at the hospital and his wound is not life-threatening.

The victim said in a statement to the police that he was in his apartment when he heard a fight outside. “He said a friend of his was fighting another male and others started to jump in on the fight,” Gomez said. “The victim thought that was unfair and that the fight should have been one-on-one.”

As the fight continued, Gomez said, the suspect stabbed the victim.

The victim described the suspect as a man in his 50s, medium to heavy build and he was last seen wearing a yellow jacket.

Officers are currently on scene collecting evidence and are searching Chinatown for the suspect.
