Northwest Patrol carries out operation targeting traffic violations

Officers with the Northwest Policing District this week conducted an operation targeting traffic violations committed by pedestrians in northwest Fresno.

The operation, which began 6 a.m Wednesday and ended 6 a.m. Thursday, was in response to last year’s 51 traffic related fatalities, 25 of which were pedestrian related. Officers made contact with 47 traffic violators total, including pedestrians who were walking in the road causing vehicles to slow down or swerve, and those crossing streets against traffic signals.

Thirty-three of the 47 people stopped by police were pedestrians, with 26 of them receiving citations for allegedly committing hazardous violations.

Twelve of those stopped were drivers, and seven were issued citations. Two people stopped were issued citations for alleged violations committed while on bicycles.

The operation ended with a total of 35 people being cited. One pedestrian was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant for robbery. Three misdemeanor warrant arrests were made, along with one person arrested on suspicion of drug possession.
