Mother jailed after 5-month-old daughter pronounced dead at hospital

A Porterville mother was jailed Tuesday morning in Tulare County in connection to the death of her 5-month-old, police reported.

Angelica Castro, 20, and the infant’s father took the baby, who was not breathing, to Sierra View Medical Center about 9 p.m. Monday, Porterville police said in a news release.

The baby was pronounced dead, and police said she suffered major injures. Lt. Dominic Barteau declined to describe the injuries citing the pending investigation, but said the baby “suffered significant trauma.”

The death was determined suspicious, and police detectives were called to the hospital to investigate.

Police later served a search warrant at the home of the child and collected evidence. Officers also took the baby’s parents to the police department to interview them.

Castro was arrested and booked Tuesday morning into Tulare County Jail on suspicion of homicide. She is being held without bail, police said, and is due in court on Thursday, jail records show.

Anyone with information regarding this case can call Porterville police Detective Orlando Ortiz at 559-782-7400.
