Drunk gang member crashes SUV and tries to run but residents capture him, police say
Fresno police are crediting several southwest Fresno residents for the capture of a man suspected of being drunk and crashing his SUV outside their homes early Sunday morning.
Sgt. Antonio Rivera said the residents on California Avenue near Edison High School heard a loud crash at 4:35 a.m. and ran outside to see a red Chevrolet Trailblazer that had hit a parked vehicle on the east curb of Lee Avenue.
Rivera said the SUV then hit a curb on California and came to a stop. The driver, later identified as gang member Ivan Acevedo, 23, tried to run, but residents captured him.
Before officers arrived, Acevedo escaped from the residents’ clutch but he was quickly captured again by police.
Investigators found a loaded handgun in the SUV’s glovebox, Rivera said.
Acevedo was booked into jail on suspicion of hit-and-run, DUI, and being an ex-felon in possession of a gun.
