A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday night in west Fresno, police say.

Lt. Carl McKnight said the shooting happened on California Avenue just east of Elm Avenue. The boy was on foot when he exchanged words with someone in a compact car carrying three to four people.

Someone shot the boy and the car sped off. The boy, who was not identified, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

McKnight said police had not established a motive and had no other details. It was the fourth shooting of the day in Fresno, following three other drive-bys (two in a county island that were being investigated by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office). McKnight said it was unknown if the shootings are related.

He asked that anyone with information about the shootings call Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867 (STOP) or police at 559-621-7000.
