Corcoran inmates attack correctional staff members during cell search

Correctional staff members are recovering after being attacked by California State Prison, Corcoran inmates on Monday.

At 11:53 a.m., prison officials said custody staff were conducting a cell search on the second tier of Facility C when inmates were ordered to go back inside their cell.

After an inmate was escorted to the lower tier, officials said another inmate “backed up to the cell door, turned around and pulled an officer into the cell.”

Officials said the second inmate encouraged other inmates to attack, and then several inmates rushed to the area.

The unit alarm was activated and inmates who attempted to participate were pepper sprayed.

Two staff members suffered non-life threatening facial injuries and were transported to an outside hospital, officials said. Four inmates suffered minor injures and were treated by prison medical staff.
