Kings County inmate who stabbed guard was already doing time for attacking police
An inmate from Kings County attacked a correctional officer with hot water and a stabbing instrument Tuesday morning at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.
Inmate Agustin Garcia, already in prison for attempted murder of a peace officer, threw a cup of hot water into the face of the correctional officer and then began to repeatedly stab the officer with a self-made weapon. Responding officers used less-lethal 40 mm rounds and batons to subdue the attacker. Two other inmates also helped officers trying to stop the attack, the corrections department said.
The injured officer suffered stab wounds to the shoulder, neck and back of his head. Garcia received a fractured skull and broken eye orbital. The officer and Garcia were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Garcia, 41, was imprisoned on June 28, 2001, to serve 52 years to life with the possibility of parole for two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer.
