Helicopter crew to robbery suspect: Stop or you’ll be bitten. He didn’t, and he was.
A man was bitten by a police dog Wednesday afternoon after allegedly robbing a home and leading Fresno police on a pursuit on ground and in the air.
Fresno police said Anthony Cantu, 43, loaded his loot into a U-Haul around 1:20 p.m. and took off. He was followed by the victim’s son-in-law into Clovis near Bullard and Helm avenues.
When Fresno and Clovis police joined the chase, Cantu drove onto Highway 168. Police called the pursuit off for safety reasons and a Fresno police Skywatch helicopter crew began following Cantu as he drove through southeast Fresno, hitting parked cars and an empty horse trailer.
He stopped at Fourth Street and Lowe Avenue and ran from the U-Haul, with the aircrew telling him he would be bitten by a police dog if he didn’t surrender.
Cantu jumped a fence and was bitten by the dog before he was arrested. Police said officers found a bag of methamphetamine in his pocket.
Items from the victim’s home were found in the U-Haul.
Cantu remained in Fresno County Jail on Friday on various charges with total bail of $118,000.
