A 16-year-old student at Edison High School in west Fresno was arrested Friday morning on charges of illegally having a gun on a school campus.

Student resource officer Anthony Alvarado was called around 9:40 a.m. by school staff about three students who were detained on suspicions of smoking marijuana on campus and for attempting to leave school grounds.

As the students were escorted to the administrative offices, one admitted to having a gun in his backpack, police said. The bag was searched and a loaded 9 mm handgun was found.

Detectives from the police Street Violence Section Gun Crimes Unit responded. The teen was booked into Fresno County Juvenile Hall for several weapons charges.
