Ridin’ and stylin’: Local boutiques offer Western chic styles for upcoming Clovis Rodeo

Yee-haw! The 102nd Clovis Rodeo is riding into Clovis next week, April 21-24. And although adrenaline-pumping activities started a few weeks ago, a plethora of events are calling your name.

Each year, the Clovis Rodeo draws thousands of attendees to the streets of Old Town Clovis. With ample opportunities to strut your stuff, you need an outfit that will scream with style.

Julie Curry, owner of Cowgirl Glitz Boutique, has brought her mobile fashion boutique to the Clovis Rodeo for the past six years — as well as festivals and concerts throughout California.

She has noticed a shift from traditional Western clothing to hip, shabby outfits inspired by the ever-so-popular country-chic boho look.

“Whether you’re going to the rodeo, festival or a concert, the country-chic boho look will have you on point,” Curry said.

Curry said attendees can expect to see a lot of lace, fringe and crochet paired with denim jeans or shorts. Accessories — purses, hats and shoes — are likely to be adorned with rhinestones.

If you’re attending the Clovis Rodeo, Curry suggested wearing a flowy dress with cowgirl boots. If you visit Cowgirl Glitz Boutique, you can find leather accessories, bracelets and necklaces made with turquoise gems, and headbands adorned with lace and beads.

Before a mobile fashion boutique, Cowgirl Glitz Boutique held a brick-and-mortar location in Clovis. But after deliberation, Curry decided to turn her storefront into a mobile fashion boutique so she could share her love for fashion.

A classic piece for the Clovis Rodeo, Curry said, is a graphic T-shirt — add a fringe vest or cardigan for a loose, relaxed look. But her custom-made hats shouldn’t be overlooked.

In addition to baseball caps, Curry decorates fedoras and cowgirl hates with turquoise beads, rhinestones and “funky stitching.”

If you can’t attend the Clovis Rodeo, but want to stop at Cowgirl Glitz Boutique, head to Xena Rose Boutique.

Located at Fowler and Ashlan avenues, the fairly new boutique is curated by mother-and-daughter team Shirley Jackson and Tammy Carver.

Carver remembers attending the Clovis Rodeo when she was a little girl, and she’s stocking shelves and racks with the country-chic boho look.

Carver said Xena Rose Boutique, which is named after her granddaughter, has been an adventure — especially since she works with her mother.

“When you can get up and say you’re going to work, and do what you love, it’s great,” Carver said.

Xena Rose Boutique stocks feminine tops with dainty details like lace and embroidery. To top off your outfit, she suggests selecting bracelets and necklaces made with turquoise gems, which are “very versatile.”

Jackson said the country-chic boho look even applies to jeans. Attendees are used to seeing jeans decorated with rhinestones, but Jackson said jeans with crochet patches are a big hit.

Carver said one of her favorite brand of jeans is Grace in LA, which is sold at Xena Rose Boutique.

But most importantly, Carver and Jackson want customers to feel at ease while shopping at Xena Rose Boutique. They believe customers should have the opportunity to dress as they please without spending too much money.
