Stay active in 2016 with winter sports offere by City of Clovis Recreation

It’s not too early to start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions.

The registration deadlines are approaching for several City of Clovis Recreation winter sports leagues that begin in mid-January for adults.

“If you’re looking to get active, we’re here for that,” said recreation supervisor Bryan Hines. “Whether you’re an individual looking for a spot in one of these leagues or you’re a whole team, we can accommodate you. Don’t think that you have to have a full team to participate.”

The registration deadlines for each league varies. All games are played in the evenings at Clovis Recreation Center, 3495 Clovis Ave. at Dakota Avenue.

Floorball

This fast-paced game that originated in Europe is similar to indoor hockey, but players wear shoes, not skates. This 14-week league beginning Jan. 12 includes one 45-minute game per week and an end-of-season tournament. Teams are limited to 10 players; the cost is $630 per team.

Volleyball

Form a men’s or coed team of up to 12 people and join the league for $275, which includes eight regular-season games and a league t-shirt for each player. League winners will get a championship shirt as well. The season runs from Jan. 11 to March 4.

Inline Hockey

This seven-week league includes six regular-season 40-minute games and one guaranteed playoff game. The cost is $60 per player and the season is from Jan. 12 to Feb. 23.

Basketball

A men’s competition league is open, along with two recreation leagues: one for ages 18 and up and one for 30 and older. League registration fees are $360 per team and includes seven regular-season five-versus-five games from Jan. 11 through Feb. 29 and a final tournament for the top six teams in the league.

Dodgeball

Coed teams will play seven regular-season 40-minutes games in hopes of qualifying for the final tournament. Registration is $300 per team, with a maximum of 10 players per team; each player will get a league t-shirt and the winning team will get an award. The season runs from Jan. 13 to March 2.

Indoor Soccer

Coed teams ages 18 and older play on Thursday nights and coed teams ages 30 and older play on Monday nights from Jan. 11 to Feb. 29. Registration is $360 per team for the seven-game regular season and top-six team tournament.

Drop-in Sports

For $2 a session, adults can drop in for sports where no formal teams are required. Ping pong is held from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, soccer and basketball are from 8 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays and volleyball is held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays.

“If you’re new to the area or haven’t played in a long time, or if you have an issue with the commitment aspect of joining a league, the drop-in program is perfect,” Hines said. “You can drop in, play and you don’t have to come back (until you’re able).”
