Memorial set for Doc Buchanan

A memorial and open house for Floyd “Doc” Buchanan, the founding superintendent of Clovis Unified School District who passed away in August, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 in Buchanan High School’s multipurpose room, 1560 N. Minnewawa.

The public is invited to view photos and video of Buchanan, and a short program including remarks by Superintendent Janet Young and musical performances will begin at 6 p.m. Buchanan’s two favorite treats, root beer floats and popcorn, will be served.

At Buchanan’s request, remembrances may be made to the Foundation for Clovis Schools, 1450 Herndon Ave., Clovis 93611, in memory of Floyd “Doc” and Molly Buchanan.The foundation is the nonprofit organization he created that provides additional support to students and teachers by way of scholarships and classroom grants.

Step Up For Down Syndrome

The largest Down syndrome awareness event in the Central Valley will be held Saturday, Oct. 24 at Clovis Rodeo Grounds, 748 Rodeo Dr. Step Up For Down Syndrome originated as a grassroots effort to raise awareness about Down syndrome and raise funds for programs and services provided to local families. A 5K timed race will begin at 8:30 a.m. and a one-mile awareness walk will start at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $25 for the 5K (or $15 for participants with Down syndrome) and $17 for the walk (persons with Down syndrome are free). Toys for Tots Car Show set for next month

The Pontiacs of Central California will host the 16th Annual Toys for Tots Car Show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. This event, held in the Toys R Us parking lot, 1425 Shaw Ave. in Clovis, will support the U.S. Marine Corps drive to collect Christmas toys for needy children throughout the Central Valley. Registration will consist of the donation of at least one new, unwrapped toy with a value of $10 or more for each car.Open to all car and motorcycle years and makes.
