Walk for Recovery set for Sept. 19

Touchstone Recovery will host the inaugural Walk for Recovery on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The Clovis-based substance abuse treatment center is using the walk to promote National Recovery Month, recognized every September. The event will also feature bounce houses and face painting for the kids, testimonies from clients, raffles and information booths.

The goal is to educate the public about addiction as well as its treatment options and recovery, said Dana Cheatum, a counselor at the center.

“Our community is infested with substance abuse and it is especially impacting our youth,” she said. “We’re trying to bring education to the Central Valley.”

Touchstone Recovery offers a range of treatment options for those battling substance addictions. Cheatum said its services include outpatient treatment, neurofeedback treatment, medical detoxification and support groups. They also offer services and support groups to families whose loved ones are in treatment.

The walk is an opportunity to celebrate recovery successes with those in the recovery community, said Cheatum, but “we really want to bring awarenes to those who don’t know. It’s my hope that more people who are unaware come out.”

“We have a whole society that is dying due to ignorance,” she continued. “No one has to die in their addiction. There is help.”
