He lives in a one-bedroom apartment with 3 others. This vet now has a home in Clovis
A veteran who earned four medals of service in the Army will soon be moving from a one-bedroom apartment into a new home in Clovis after some assistance, city officials said Friday.
David Munoz lives in that one-bedroom unit with wife Daniela, newborn Mateo and his mother-in-law, Maria Elizabeth Garcia. He served more than three years in the Army, officials said.
The apartment is so cramped, Garcia sleeps on the couch, the family said.
So officials from the city said they teamed with the Habitat for Humanity Greater Fresno Area to provide the family with a new three-bedroom, two-bath home that covers 1,258 square feet. It’s twice the size of his apartment.
“We’re going to be forever grateful for this,” Munoz said.
Munoz is a framer for Bryan Parker Construction and his wife works for Fresno Unified School District.
The new home near Fourth Street and Sunnyside Avenue is one of several going up in the neighborhood that are projects for Habitat, officials said.
The city donated the land, officials said. The Fresno Association of Realtors donated $50,000 and the Home Depot Foundation also gave towards construction costs.
To be eligible for the home, Munoz and his family agreed to be assessed for their need for help as well as ability to pay a mortgage, according to city officials.
The city donated $75,000 and a bank donated more to help with the down payment. The house also comes with donated appliances and solar panels, officials said.
Munoz was also required to put in 500 hours of “sweat equity,” which means he personally worked on the Habitat home.
