Sonny & Cher made an appearance at the Clovis Senior Activity Center on Oct. 27 -- well, sort of.

Kay Pitts impersonated Sonny, and Jeannine Geare played Cher during a Melodears Choir rendition of “I Got You Babe” while performing at the Jolly Times Halloween celebration.

Melodears performed a program called “The ‘I’s Have It,” in which every song started with the letter I, said director Sandra Bright.

“Melodears is a group of women who like to sing two and three-part music and share our love of music with others,” Bright said. She also directs the coed California Retired Teachers Association chorus. “There are some retired teachers in Melodears, but the chorus is open to anyone who likes to sing.”

Bright herself taught at McCardle Elementary and Tioga Middle School in Fresno, worked at the Fresno Unified School District office for many years and even supervised student teachers at Fresno State for 10 years before retiring at age 70.

“Now all I work on is music,” she said.

The ladies’ ages range from 75 to 85 with a few younger and a few older ones, Bright explained.

“We perform at Yosemite Gardens in Clovis all the time, at Carmel Village, rest homes, churches, senior centers and any other venue that will have us,” she said.

The group is working on its Christmas program, of mainly secular music instead of sacred, which will be performed almost daily at different venues throughout November and December, Bright said.
