Two dead in crash south of Los Banos on Interstate 5

A tire blowout is the cause of a fatal crash on Interstate 5 south of Los Banos, the California Highway Patrol said.

Around 9:20 a.m. Monday, a 2003 Ford Expedition was heading south carrying six people when the back right tire blew out. The driver of the car, 18-year-old Javier Martinez of Los Angeles, could not maintain control of the car and sped across the lanes, overturning on the shoulder, the CHP said.

A 46-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl were ejected from the car and died at the scene. The two were not wearing seat belts, the CHP said. The victims were taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno to be treated. The other passengers in the car were identified as Rosa Villegas, 31, Rocio Ibanez, 20, and Enrique Ibanez, 18, all residents of Los Angeles, the CHP said.

The names of the two deceased passengers have not been released.
