Family of 5 rescued from island near Skaggs Bridge

A family of five was rescued when they were stranded at an island in the San Joaquin River near Skaggs Bridge on Saturday, Fresno Fire spokesman Hector Vasquez said.

Fresno Fire crews responded to the call of a drowning child around 12:23 p.m. near the Skaggs Bridge County Park off of Highway 145 and Barstow avenue. The family was able to make it to an island on the river where they were stranded, Vasquez said, but no one was injured.

A helicopter located the family, and Fresno Fire’s Urban Search and Rescue team launched a boat to rescue the family from the island, Vasquez said.

Approximately 25 firefighters responded to the call, including a dive team to aid in the rescue.
