Fresno Veterans Home to hold flag-raising ceremony July 4

A flag-raising ceremony will take place July 4 at the Fresno Veterans Home in southwest Fresno, spokeswoman Julie Cusator announced.

The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. at 2811 W. California Ave., with an Army National Guard Humvee delivering the flag to American Legion Post 509. It will also include local resident Ann Whitehurst singing the national anthem, a poetry reading by Veterans Home resident Augie Chavez and a recitation of the Declaration of Independence by 10-year-old Nathan Bond.

Residents of the long-term care facility were able to raise donations from the community to install the new flagpole, which will be used to lower the flag to half staff when a resident passes away, Cusator said.
