Man dies at highway offramp driving at ‘freeway speed’
One man is dead after colliding with a guardrail as he exited Highway 99 at “freeway speed” in Madera County on Friday afternoon, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Darren Long said.
Long said a 43-year-old man was traveling north on Highway 99 about 5 p.m. when he exited onto Avenue 17 but continued at a high rate of speed even as he drove onto the offramp.
The driver of the 2002 Ford F-150 was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from his vehicle when it overturned after hitting the guardrail at the offramp, Long said.
A motorist who witnessed the accident moved out of the way as the driver approached the offramp.
“He never really slowed down,” Long said.
