A fire that started in a vacant southeast Fresno home is under investigation after neighbors reported seeing several teenagers running from the scene, Battalion Chief Tony Escobedo said Saturday.

Escobedo said firefighters responded to a home on 4703 E. Thomas Ave. a little after 4 p.m. with reports of heavy smoke and fire.

When they arrived, they found the home was locked and had no easy entrance. Crews searched the area before making their way in and discovered fire at the front and back ends of the home.

Escobedo believes the fire started from the back of the home, where the teens were seen running from.

“Ironically, the main part of the fire was at the back of the house,” Escobedo said.

Neighbors reported seeing the teens stripping a vehicle at the front of the home and later running toward the back, and then the fire started shortly after, Escobedo said.

Escobedo said the same home has been the location of at least three or four other fires in the past. No injuries were reported.
