A 28-year-old Visalia gang member was shot Thursday afternoon by a police officer in the area of Northeast Second Avenue and Grape Street, Sgt. Jon Pree said.

Police had received a report of an armed gang member on a bicycle in the vicinity of Houston Avenue and Court Streets. When an officer attempted to talk to Eliseo Jose Briseno near Northeast Second and Grape Street, Briseno took off and bicycled toward a home, police said. The officer followed him to a backyard, where Briseno reached into his waistband, removed an item and turned to the officer, who shot him, Pree said.

A loaded handgun and holster were found at the scene, Pree said.

Briseno was arrested and then taken to a local hospital for treatment, Pree said.

A sheriff’s van is on the scene. The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation of the shooting.
