CHP honors two men for helping Fresno officer in need
Two Fresno men received CHP Citizen’s Awards on Friday for coming to the aid of an officer as he struggled with a man trying to jump off a freeway overpass.
On Feb. 2, a man threatening a suicide attempt was standing on the railing of the Highway 41 Herndon Avenue overpass when he lost his balance and fell back onto the street, the California Highway Patrol said.
Officer Christopher Swanberg tackled the man but a struggle ensued and the man got his leg over the railing as Swanberg tried to hold him back.
Jorge Banos and Daniel Martinez, driving on Herndon in their work truck, saw the struggle and believed the officer was in danger of being pulled over the railing. They stopped and helped Swanberg pull the man off the railing and assisted in restraining him.
