Sinkhole closes Madera city street

Schnoor Street between Howard Road and 5th Street in Madera was closed Monday after a sinkhole opened up in the middle of the roadway, police said.

The Madera Police Department posted a video and photos on its Facebook page showing about a 12 foot by 15 foot section of pavement collapsing. The hole is about 15 to 20 feet deep.

It is not known what caused the roadway to collapse, but the police department said the recent rain may be the cause. The road is expected to be closed for an extended period for repairs.
