Workers wrapped protective plastic around a stone sculpture titled “Mother and Child” Thursday in preparation for moving it from the Fulton Mall.

The sculpture by artist Raimondo Puccinelli was on the mall between Tulare and Inyo streets.

A bronze sculpture called “Obos” by George Tsutakawa was also readied for moving.

The two sculptures will be hauled to Sculpture Conservation Studios in Los Angeles for work as part of the city’s $20 million project to reopen the six-block mall to vehicles. They were among nearly two dozen sculptures on the mall, many of which will be incorporated into the design of the restored Fulton Street between Inyo and Stanislaus streets. About $5 million of the project’s budget is for preserving the mall’s art collection.

Tree cutting on the mall began earlier this week.
