19-year-old man drowns in Millerton Lake

A 19-year-old man drowned Saturday afternoon in the waters of Millerton Lake, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.

Witnesses saw the man struggle as he swam near the boat ramp and campground area around 5:35 p.m., Lt. Ron Hayes said. Deputies and park rangers with the California Department of Parks and Recreation arrived minutes later as they tried to look for the victim. The sheriff’s office later called on their helicopter and dive team to help with the search.

The victim was found unconscious around 6:45 p.m as he was pulled out of the water, Hayes said. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him before taking him to Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim’s name is being withheld by the coroner until family is notified.
