Elderly woman dies in Clovis apartment fire

An elderly woman died after a two-alarm fire swept through a two-story apartment building early Friday, the Clovis Fire Department reported.

The fire was reported just before 2 a.m. at 1232 Harvard Ave. Firefighters found flames coming from a downstairs apartment and burning the apartment above it.

Clovis police who arrived before the fire crews removed the woman from one of the apartments. She was taken to Clovis Community Medical Center, where she died, Deputy Fire Chief John Binaski said.

Fire crews checked the apartments to ensure no one else was inside.

The fire spread to four units and jeopardized the wing of the apartment complex before fire crews were able to contain it.

Damage was estimated at $450,000 and several occupants were displaced. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
