State offices will be closed Thursday in recognition of César Chávez Day of Service and Learning.

The holiday affects only state offices, including Fresno State University and Fresno County Superior Court. Municipal and federal offices will remain open, as will banks.

The day has been observed in California since 1995 and is intended to promote community service in honor of Chávez, the co-founder of the United Farm Workers union. He was born on March 31, 1927 and died on April 23, 1993.
