Bike event aims to bring bicycle awareness to southeast Fresno
Southeast Fresno residents will have the chance to learn about bike safety and maintenance at an event on March 19, Genoveva Islas, spokeswoman for Cultiva La Salud, said.
Expert mechanics will offer workshops in Spanish and English to teach residents the benefits of “do it yourself” bike repair on Saturday at the Community Bike Kitchen event beginning at 11 a.m. at the Mosqueda Community Center, Isla said.
Isla said the workshops will teach a variety of common maintenance such as fixing a flat tire, changing a tube, tightening brakes and even replacing wheel spokes.
At 1 p.m., a Cumbia Ride will roll through, which aims to promote safety and good bicycle riding practices; Latin music will play along during the bicycle ride.
All events are made possible through a partnership of local groups like Bici-Projects, Fresno County Bicycle Coalition, Tower Velo and fresno Ideaworks, who recognize the need for resources in Latino communities in southeast Fresno.
Latino families in southeast Fresno have “limited access to safe places to be active,” Isla said, and this event will give local residents an alternative to an otherwise sedentary lifestyle at home.
