Big rig spills glass across northbound lanes of Highway 99 near Pixley

A trailer broke free from a big rig and spilled a load of glass bottles across the northbound lanes of Highway 99 near Pixley early Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

Ronald Franken, 57, of La Mirada, was traveling just south of Avenue 120, when he told officers he may have dozed off around 3 a.m. as his 2001 Peterbilt drifted toward the center divider, the CHP said.

Franken awoke to his big rig striking the center divider and immediately steered it to the right in an effort to re-enter the lanes, the CHP said. This caused the trailer to break free of the Peterbilt and spill a load of glass bottles that were supposed to be recycled.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for clean-up from Court Street to Avenue 120 for almost three hours, the CHP said.
