Merced County deputy’s car hits, kills man who was walking on highway

An on-duty Merced County sheriff’s deputy struck and killed a pedestrian who was walking on a highway Thursday night near Stevinson.

The deputy was driving a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria south on Highway 165, passing Third Avenue, when he struck a pedestrian in the highway’s southbound lane around 8 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

The pedestrian, a 51-year-old male from Hilmar, died from his injuries at the scene. He was wearing dark clothing and there was light rain in the area at the time of the collision, the CHP said.

The deputy was not identified. The identity of the victim is pending and the collision remains under investigation.
