Two hurt when fire erupts at northwest Fresno apartment

Two people suffered minor injuries after a fire burned through a northwest Fresno apartment Monday evening.

The fire was reported at an apartment on 6019 N. College Ave., just east of Maroa and Bullard avenues, around 5:30 p.m., Fresno fire spokesman Hector Vasquez said.

The fire was contained to an upstairs apartment and had already burned through the roof by the time units arrived, Vasquez said. An apartment below the fire suffered damage as well.

Cause of the blaze is under investigation, but it appeared to have started in the back bedroom of the upstairs unit, he said.

Both apartment units were made uninhabitable from the fire. The Red Cross has been called to provide shelter to the occupants.

Around 28 firefighters responded to the blaze, with five engines and two trucks, Vasquez said.

The two injured people were taken to Community Regional Medical Center, Vasquez said.
