A toy drive, titled “Tark Toy Drive,” will take place before the Fresno State vs. UNLV men’s basketball game at the Save Mart Center on Saturday in honor of legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian.
The family of the former Fresno State and UNLV coach are launching the toy drive to raise awareness on how strokes can affect all age groups. Tarkanian’s 5-year-old grandson, also named Jerry Tarkanian, had a stroke in April 2015.
Stuffed toy donations will be given to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera and the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada and can be dropped off at the Save Mart Center’s northwest entrance from 3-4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game will begin at 4 p.m.
Tarkanian died at 84 in February 2015. Tarkanian is best kmown for leading UNLV’s men basketball team to the 1990 NCAA Championship and four trips to the Final Four. He is also well known for coaching the Fresno State men’s basketball team to two NCAA Tournaments and posting six straight 20-win seasons before retiring in 2002.
Tickets start at $15. All fire, military, paramedics, police, and military personnel receive free admission in celebration of “Hero’s Night” on Saturday.
Fans are encouraged to wear navy blue as part of the “Night in Navy” promotion, where 2,500 limited edition navy T-shirts will be given away.
