One killed when medical transport van hits big rig in Tulare County

A woman died after the medical transport van she was a passenger in collided with a milk tanker in heavy fog, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.

About 9:30 a.m., the van carrying three passengers was heading west on Avenue 216 when the driver turned left onto Road 44 west of Tulare.

The van collided nearly head on with an oncoming milk tanker truck heading east on Avenue 216. A female passenger in the van died at the scene. Her name was being withheld until her family can be notified.

It appears the driver did not see the big rig, CHP spokesman Scott Harris said. The driver of the van and two passengers were taken to Tulare Regional Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries.

The truck driver was not injured. Investigators said alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
