Victims of fatal crash near Kingsburg identified

The two people who died in a head-on collision Thursday evening south of Kingsburg have been identified as Matthew Cuellar, 26, and Sharnae Cuellar, 24, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office said.

The collision happened around 5:20 p.m. near the intersection of Clarkson and Bethel avenues, near the Kingsburg Cemetery, when the driver of a 2002 Chevy collided with a Honda Civic carrying four or five people, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Trenholm said. The Chevy then went into a nearby drainage ditch, where the driver broke his leg.

. The Cuellars, from Visalia, were in the Honda Civic, the CHP reported. A 5-year-old child riding in the Honda was taken by helicopter to Community Regional Medical Center, where after the crash she was listed in critical condition with severe head trauma. An update on the child’s condition was not available Monday.

The remaining occupants of the Honda had minor injuries, Trenholm said.

Officers are investigating the cause of the accident. The CHP said drug use may be a factor in the crash.
