Cloudy skies that have shrouded the central San Joaquin Valley and Sierras Monday dropped rain in the foothills, and rain is expected to spread to the Valley floor by evening, the National Weather Service reported.

Monday’s storm was expected to be just one in a string of storms that is likely to leave the region with mostly gray skies and damp pavement through Christmas Day.

Temperatures in Fresno are expected to hit the mid-50s during the day, dipping to the low to mid-40s overnight through Wednesday, before cooler air settles in later in the week. By late Thursday, snow levels in the Sierra could drop as low as 1,500 feet, the weather service said.
