Clovis East places second in small-school band championships

Clovis East High School placed second among smaller schools in the Western Band Association’s Grand Championships Sunday at Bulldog Stadium at Fresno State.

The second-place finish came on the heels of Saturday’s first-place finish for Clovis East in the AAA Class championships, which were held at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High. Saturday’s large-school competitions were held at Bulldog Stadium at Fresno State.

Placing first in the small school category was Cerritos High in Los Angeles County.

Also competing Sunday were Clovis North High, which placed fifth among larger schools, and Clovis High, which placed 12th in the same category. First place went to Ayala High School in Chino Hills.

Fresno and Clovis schools played host Saturday to the Western Band Association high school band class championships, whose winners competed Sunday at the grand championships.

Bands are ranked by the number of members: A classes have up to 60, while AAAAA classes have more than 140.

On Saturday, 38 high school bands in the Classes A, AA and AAA competed at Buchanan High, while 32 bands in the Classes AAAA and AAAAA competed at Fresno State’s Bulldog Stadium.
