Second person dies after Visalia motorcycle-vs.-car crash

A second person has died as a result of injuries suffered in a Veterans Day crash in northwest Visalia between a motorcycle and a car, police say.

Sgt. Damon Maurice said 85-year-old Phyllis Fechner of Visalia died Thursday at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. She had suffered major head injuries.

The motorcycle rider, 26-year-old Cody Holmes of Visalia, was pronounced dead at Kaweah Delta Hospital.

A passenger in Fechner’s car, 90-year-old William Smith of Visalia, is being treated at Community Regional, also for a major head injury.

According to Maurice, the accident happened just after 6 p.m. Holmes was on a 2008 Yamaha northbound on Akers Street when he collided with Fechner’s 2004 Hyundai as she turned left into the Save Mart supermarket shopping center.

Maurice said the investigation is continuing.
