A nitric acid spill forced the California Highway Patrol to close Highway 198 near the Lemoore Naval Air Station for about three hours Friday.
The spill happened about 10:30 a.m., the CHP said.
The Kings County Fire Department said the spill involved nitric acid used as an agricultural chemical.
CHP officer Robert Lawson said the highway was closed between 25th Avenue and the Avenal cutoff.
The Navy’s hazardous materials team responded at the request of local authorities, but the spill involved about 8 to 10 gallons and was cleaned up by the company responsible for it, base spokesman Marc Carlero said.
The highway reopened to traffic between 1:30 and 2 p.m.
