Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central California’s book fair fundraiser at Barnes & Noble in the Villaggio Shopping Center in northwest Fresno begins Thursday and ends Sunday, Nov. 15. A portion of every purchase goes to the organization.
“Reading a book helps a child open their imagination to endless possibilities,” said Diane Phakonekham, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters. “We encourage our mentors (Bigs) to do various activities with our littles that will not only educate them but allow them to utilize their creative outlets. Many of them already visit the bookstore as part of their time spent with their littles. So when then idea was presented to us we jumped at the chance.”
Miss Fresno County Keri Allred, child literacy advocate and Big, presented the idea to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
"My goal with partnering Big Brothers Big Big Sisters and Barnes & Noble together to do a book drive was so that literacy can be encouraged more amongst our youth,” said Allred. “With this book drive I hope to receive many donated books and raise enough funds so that our organization can form a library of books at our Fresno chapter, allowing our Littles to lose themselves in the world of reading. Not only will they learn the importance of education and reading, but they will realize reading is something they can love.”
