To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the establishment of early Germanic immigrants along the Volga River in Russia, the Center for German Studies at Concordia University is hosting an all day seminar series at the Piccadilly Inn Shaw on Nov. 21.
Brent Mai, Director of the Center for Volga German Studies at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, will be the keynote speaker for the day. Mai, whose ancestors emigrated from the German colonies along the Volga River, has served as the director of the CVGS since its founding in 2004. The first Volga Germans arrived in the San Joaquin Valley in 1886.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the first of seven seminars beginning at 9 a.m., ranging from topics such as heritage, geography, the Volga Germans of South America, genealogical resources, a “day in the life” of Volga Germans, deportation in 1941 and the Volga Germans today. The day concludes at 5:30 p.m.
