Visalia police are scrapping their Harley Davidson motorcycles for new BMWs.

Sgt. Jon Pree said the new German-made BMW 1200 RTP is manufactured specifically for law enforcement and that the liquid-cooled engine will run significantly cooler than the Harley, a key factor in the decision because of the extreme heat of the Central San Joaquin Valley in Summer months. In addition, Pree said decreased stopping distance and increased visibility of the BMW played a part in the decision.

The California Highway Patrol recently went in the opposite direction with regard to their choice of motorcycle, opting for the Harley.
