Grant repays costs for cleanup of illegal dumpsite in Kings Co.
A landowner in Kings County has been awarded a grant of more than $56,000 to reimburse for cleaning up tons of illegally dumped trash that had accumulated over the years.
The grant to Hewitson Ranch near Kettleman City from California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, or CalRecycle, was announced Tuesday. According to information from the state, Kings County officials had twice ordered the owners, in 2000 and 2015, to clean up the property, which was reportedly used for years as an illegal dumpsite.
The grant for $56,542 comes from CalRecycle’s Farm and Ranch Solid Waste Cleanup and Abatement Grant program, which helps defray the costs of cleaning up illegally dumped trash after cities or counties determine that the property owner was not responsible for the dumping. Hewitson Ranch removed more than 170 tons of trash from its land and put up a gate to prevent future dumping.
