A fire erupted Friday night in northeast Fresno at the Casa Del Rio apartment complex across the street from Hoover High School, destroying one unit and leaving residents displaced.

Fresno City and Clovis fire departments both responded to the burning complex on First Street just south of Bullard Avenue. A total of 10 units responded, nine from Fresno and one from Clovis, and arrived within six minutes.

The portion of the building that was damaged had three apartments; one, where at least two people lived, was extensively damaged.

“I would say that all of the property was a total loss,” said Fresno Battalion Chief Thomas Cope. The next-door apartment suffered only smoke damage.

The people in the burning unit safely escaped, along with other nearby residents.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
