Storm system brings heavy winds, possible thunderstorms to Valley

A storm system moving south from Canada is bringing with it high winds and a chance of rain to parts of the central San Joaquin Valley.

Wind gusts of about 40 mph were hitting Pacheco Pass Saturday afternoon, said Jeff Barlow, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hanford. The winds should last until 8 p.m. Saturday.

The Valley may see some rain on Sunday, and it gets more and more likely as the system moves south picking up moisture along the way, Barlow said.

In Fresno there is a slight chance of showers and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. Once it moves past Fresno County into Kern County the chance of rain rises to 50 percent.

There isn’t expected to be any rainfall in Merced County on Sunday.
