A Madera woman was freed Sunday morning after spending at least a day stuck in a large water drainage canal.

Madera police said the woman was found healthy but stuck inside the canal near Martin Luther King School.

Cal Fire responded and cut the woman free. She said she wandered into the canal through another access point nearly a mile away.

Madera police said the incident serves as a reminder that people should stay away from canals, which frequently and unexpectedly flood.
