Man in critical condition after east-central Fresno crash

A 70-year-old man is in critical condition after he was ejected during a crash around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday in east-central Fresno, police said.

Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez said the man was driving north on Maple Avenue when he swerved into a car stopped in the turn lane at the Shields Avenue intersection. The crash caused the man’s truck to spin out and strike another truck.

The driver’s seatbelt did not work, Gomez said, and he was thrown out of the passenger side window of his truck. He is conscious and breathing, but police don’t believe he will survive.

A beer can was found near the truck, prompting police to investigate the crash as a possible DUI, Gomez said.

The other drivers were alone in their vehicles and not hurt, Gomez said.

Maple is closed in all directions just south of Shields, which has also been reduced to one lane on its eastbound side. Gomez said the closures will continue for two to four hours.
