The National Park Service said Monday that the reopening of Grant Grove Village has been delayed to allow firefighters more time to finish firefighting activities.

The mixing of fire equipment and park visitors remained an unsafe situation, the Park Service said.

Firefighters hope to reopen Grant Grove Village only to visitors at 8 a.m. Tuesday, but the reopening is dependent on the fire and safety situations.

The General Grant Tree will remain closed until further notice, and a road block will be in place at the intersection of Highway 180 and Highway 198. General’s Highway remains open.

The Rough Fire, which started July 31 by lightning, has consumed nearly 142,000 acres and is 70 percent contained.
