Mexican independence celebrated in Fresno event

The U.S. and Mexican flags were raised and children sang the national anthems of the two countries Tuesday in a celebration in Fresno of the 205th anniversary of Mexico’s independence.

The event, held at Fresno City Hall, marked the seventh time the local Consulate of Mexico joined with City Hall to recognize Mexican independence.

Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin and Mexican Consul Vincete Sánchez Ventura spoke, and folkloric dancers from Sunnyside High School performed. Singing the “Star Spangled Banner” was 9-year-old Valeria Suarez, while 13-year-old Marianita Nájera performed the Mexican anthem.
