Crash near Coalinga kills Irvine woman
An Irvine woman was killed Saturday morning near Coalinga when the vehicle she was riding in turned into the path of an oncoming car and was struck, the California Highway Patrol said.
Just after 9 a.m., Clarito Bitao Gandia, 59, of Irvine, was driving a 2014 Toyota west on Highway 198 west of Interstate 5 when he turned left to enter a private drive -- and turned into the path of a 2005 Jeep that was heading east on the highway. The Jeep, unable to avoid the collision, hit the right-rear passenger side of the Toyota, killing the woman. Her identity is being withheld until family can be notified.
Gandia and his other passengers received minor injuries and were taken to Coalinga Regional Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Jeep, Andrew Wagoner, 45, of Coalinga, was uninjured.
